A coffee table is the second-most-used piece of furniture in most homes (after the sofa). Get it right and it disappears into your life. Get it wrong and you'll be moving it every week.
The four measurements that matter
1. Height vs sofa seat
Coffee table top should sit 1" lower than your sofa seat cushion. Anything more than 2" higher or lower feels wrong. Standard sofa seats are 17–19" — so 16–18" is your target table height.
2. Length vs sofa
Aim for 2/3 the length of your sofa. Shorter feels mismatched. Longer crowds the seating arrangement. 84" sofa → 56" table.
3. Distance from sofa
14–18 inches between sofa front and coffee table. Less and you can't get out. More and you can't reach your drink.
4. Distance to TV/feature wall
At least 30 inches for traffic flow.
Three material decisions
Wood
Solid hardwood (walnut, white oak, ash) wears for decades. Veneers chip and water-damage. We never use veneer in our structural surfaces.
Stone
Travertine and marble are gorgeous but porous — they stain. Insist on a factory sealant if going stone-top. The Modnium Mackenzie Travertine Coffee Table ships pre-sealed and food-safe.
Glass
Looks airy, shows fingerprints, scratches over time. Acceptable for small apartments where visual weight matters. Avoid for households with kids.
Quick checklist before buying
- ✓ Have you measured your sofa height + 2/3 length?
- ✓ Have you measured doorway and stair clearance?
- ✓ Is the top sealed if it's stone?
- ✓ Does it have storage if you need it?
- ✓ Does it have soft-close drawers if drawers?
